Church music

Today, my wife and I visited a different kind of church.  I was intrigued because they didn’t have a piano or an organ, not even a hymn book.  They actually sang out of the Psalms.  It was a pleasant experience.  They had a tune they used and sang acapella.  I had never been exposed to that form of worship.  Being a vocalist, I enjoyed singing the words from the Psalms and to hear the beautiful voices of others singing those words seemed to elevate the worship service to a higher spiritual experience.

In this age, when we hear so much in church of guitars, drums and bands so loud that you cannot hear yourself sing, it was a quiet relief and extremely worshipful.

Fifteen years ago, I thought the church ought to change and adopt a more contemporary type of worship.  I was instrumental in helping to push toward that direction of worship.  However, today, I regret that I was associated with that kind of change.  Why?  Because most of it is self-centered instead of Christ-centered.  Not all of the music, but a large portion of it is all about me me me.

Having been raised strumming a guitar, I enjoy some good music and a little toe-tapping.  But I don’t enjoy the loud bands for worship anymore.

I won’t go back to that church, not because of it’s singing, but because the preacher didn’t have the gift of preaching.  Any preacher called of God should possess the gift of preaching.  Unfortunately, many in the pulpits today are void of it, but that’s another subject for another time.
