I Cannot Understand God!

I Cannot Understand God!

This morning I was reading a commentary on Matthew by H.A Ironside in preparation for a paper I am writing for my Doctorate in Theology.  As I was reading in chapter 20, I had some thoughts about God that were too great for my comprehension.  Let me share some of them with you.

I understand what the Bible says about God and how I am responsible to Him.  I understand that I must be redeemed by the precious blood of Christ in order to become reconciled to Him so that He forgives my debt of sin that I owe.

However, my thoughts began to soar thinking about Who this God is and how powerful He is to just create things out of nothing.  I know, the Big Bang scientists discovered that idea in the last century but they cannot explain with certainty how it happened from nothing which they say actually happened from nothing.  Several high ranking scientists say that there must have been a space ship from somewhere that dropped spores on the earth and that’s where it all must have come from.  Wow, such faith and imagination they have.  I think a grade school student could have come up with that after watching an episode of Star Trek.

Searching my mind trying to think about how big this God is, I drew a blank.  We normally have something with which to compare things and I had nothing to place alongside of my thoughts to try to understand His enormity.  This God has always been.  Try to wrap your head around that?  He has been here for the eons and eons of a timeless eternity.  What was He doing all that time?  I have no idea.

God has always existed.  In the Bible, His says that His name is “I AM.”  In Hebrews 11:6 it describes Him as “He Is.”  I know, you do not have anything either in your mind to compare that thought with.  But this God “is” and He exists and always has existed.

Now, let’s go further in this line of thinking:  Why in the world is this God interested in me and you?  Doesn’t that seem like a logical question to you?  Why does He care?  He has always been, so why does He care so much for we little humans that He created?  So much that He sent His only eternally living Son to come down to this earth in human form to save us from our own utter destruction.

Does that make any sense to you?

I think I found the answer.  It is in Genesis 1:26a and 27.  “Then God said, “Let Us (notice the plurality of “us” and “our” found here meaning God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness.”  Then verse 27 says: “So God created man in His own image; He created him in the IMAGE of GOD; He created them male and female.”

Did you see it?  After living eternally for eons of time, creating angels as messengers, and so on, He created some humans that were in His own image and likeness.  That was not the case with angels.  He then breathed into the first human the “breath of life” Genesis 2:7 and man became a living soul.  These humans were His special creation, designed in His Own Image and Likeness, and also they were an eternal being.  You see, man will live forever.  Death is only a transfer from this human temporal state to an eternal place forever.  Your decision to serve Him or not determines your destination.

I don’t know about you, but the thought about God’s creating us in His likeness just blew my mind!

Now, get the picture.  This God Who has always been decides to create a new group called humans.  This group of His creation did not obey the ONE little rule that He gave them:  Don’t eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  That was it!!! And they couldn’t resist and plunged all of us into being born with a sin nature and mankind began at that point to know evil.

Now, God knew this was going to happen because He knows all things.  So to buy back His little creatures from their rebellion, He asks His Son, the Lord Jesus to go down to the earth and pay their ransom so they could be saved.

What kind of love does that?  I cannot understand such love.  My human love causes me to be selfish and think mainly about myself and gaining in this earthly life.  But God, this Eternal Person, has such a capacity for love that He wanted to save us from our own destruction.  He sent His only eternal Son.  He gave Him to us to redeem His creation, if they would only now believe on His Son.

If you can understand that kind of love, you have a greater mind than I have.

I can only bow before Him in humility and worship His Son because the content of His message to me is greater than I can understand.

If you have never turned your life over to Him, please recognize what He has done to ransom you from your sin and your future destination.  He loves you more than you can understand.  Trust Him by faith today.

God bless,

Ken Lewis
