I was watching my favorite college basketball team play one Saturday, the Kansas Jayhawks verses the Iowa State Hawkeyes. Kansas led from the beginning and was doing great, but the Hawkeyes were hanging in there tightly.
It was in the second half with about 8 or 10 minutes left and the Hawkeyes got to within 4 points of the Jayhawks and I began to squirm. We were getting beaten on rebounds and turning the ball over and it looked like we were going to lose this game. We had been ahead once by 17 points. I couldn’t stand it any longer.
I was watching the game about 2 hours after it was over on a recording from my DVR. I knew the final score would be on the internet, so I quickly turned my monitor on and got on the internet to see what the outcome had been… and we had won by 15 points.
I was so relieved. My anxiety had gone away and I was again relaxed. I watched the rest of the game without anxiety and experienced great peace that we were going to win in the end.
The thought occurred to me that life is like that with God. We get so caught up in circumstances and our anxiety levels sky rocket and we worry ourselves sick. Did we forget that at the end of life’s game, we actually win? Should Biblical truths, readily available in God’s Word concerning the end of this life keep us from being anxious about the future?
We need to take a look at our own handling of circumstances. It is easy to get focused on our problems. We get wrapped up in how difficult life is and we struggle to calm our nerves.
Jesus said, “for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Life can get crazy at times and it can be very tough. But, let us take stock in the fact that one of these days, these short days upon the earth, this all will pass and believers are promised victory! We win. Does that not give you hope? Should that not give you peace?
Think about it and make life a celebration of winning, because we do win. Get your hope up and your eyes on the prize. God has provided the way. Get on board with reality.
Now if the thought of this life coming to an end frightens you, then you need to make amends with God. Go back to chapter 12 and read how you can be at peace and go to heaven when you leave this earth. Do it now. Hebrews warns us in 9:27…it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.
Friend, you only have this life to settle things with God. Do it while you have the opportunity, before it passes from you.
