What does the Bible say about gluttony!

I am fascinated with all the false Biblical information on the internet, especially the comment “when is the last time you heard a message on gluttony.” Some of these so-called religious writers like to shame people who are fat. Interested in the subject myself because I have been on the Keto diet and lost much weight, such as I’m down to a weight below my weight when I was 31 years old. I’m still losing weight and hope to be down to a normal weight in the future. It has not been easy, but I’m determined.

So I began to look through Scripture for verses on gluttony, glutton, and gluttonous. I found in the New Testament, since I have felt shame when I have been condemned by these religious zealots who make up false teachings.

What did I find? There are two verses in the New Testament and they are Matthew 11:19 and Luke 7:34 and O yes, one in Deuteronomy 21.20. None on gluttonous or glutton anywhere. The Old Testament defines gluttony as “wanting meats from Egypt.” It does not refer to eating too much. God did not want them to desire the food they had in Egypt. He had set them free from their slavery and all through the wilderness wanderings they complained about not having what they had in Egypt and that made God angry. So that is the proper meaning of gluttony from the Bible.

Now, do not misunderstand me. Overindulgence is not good, but let me share with you some of my research.

Experts say that it is an insulin problem. People overeat because they are hungry and the root cause is insulin. You see, studies indicate that a skinny persons insulin is much different than a fat persons. I won’t give you all the statistical information I found because that would be too boring so I’ll just give you the skinny on it all. (sorry for the pun)

Insulin is the culprit. When a skinny person eats a meal, his insulin is high for about two hours and then goes down to normal. When a fat person eats a meal, his insulin is very high and lasts twice as long and never gets down to where the skinny person’s level is. Higher Insulin makes you hungry. And most or at least many fat people are hungry a lot. Therefore, they eat snacks they don’t need and too much food.

So what drives insulin higher? Carbohydrates! They are the major culprit driving insulin higher and causing you to be resistant also. You need insulin, but if you are a lot overweight like I was and still am, you do not need things that spike your insulin. Carbohydrates drive insulin up. If you are diabetic, talk to your doctor and do not take my advice.

What else drives insulin higher? Some sweeteners. If you find dextrose in your sweetener, that is a sugar and even though the package said “0” calories, it will, in many people, spike their insulin. Fruits contain sugar and a lot, such as bananas, oranges, apples, grapes, etc. Low sugar is in blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and such. All sugars are Carbohydrates.

So there is some information that I hope you find helpful.

The reason I wrote this article was not to talk about diet, but to point out that shaming people and trying to put that emphasis from the Bible is false theology. It seems that Christians get a kick out of shaming people and judging people with their own brand of false truth.

I have a Bachelor degree in Religion, a Masters in Theology and a Doctorate in Theology. I don’t know everything in the Bible but I have read it many times and studied it since I was a youth. I am tired of these preachers shaming good people who try to live a godly life and judging others who don’t measure up to their brand of Christianity.

Sorry, I had to get that off my chest.

Thanks for reading,
