Hello This Is God Calling

Wow, that would be some call. What would you say? Would you try to act intelligent and quote some Scripture to show God how much you know? How would your voice sound? Would it be squeaky or would we try to use a low sounding voice? I know we would try to act and sound as if we had it all together. Would you be frightened… a little? I mean, if He used that deep voice from Heaven we might jump a little at first but then try to act like we’re okay. Well, whatever, that would be an awesome phone call.

Last year I received a call from my son who informed us that he and his family were coming to see us the next weekend. We were excited to hear from him and were looking forward to seeing him and his lovely wife and our grandchildren. Yet our next thought was frightening! We had better get busy and finish the little projects around the house that we had been putting off. Then, after some consideration, wisdom took over and we decided that things would be fine just the way they were.

However, it got me thinking: Am I ready and excited for the return of our Lord? How often do we put off what needs to be done now? Scripture commands us to be ready all the time. That is what the parable of the bridesmaids seeks to teach us.

What promise do we have that assures us one more day? I had to think, Am I ready? I may not be ready for company but more importantly am I ready for the Lord’s return. Watching the news, seeing strife happening around the world, hearing about the rumors of war, seeing the growth in knowledge and the growth in technology, I can’t help but think His return is getting close.

Sadly I once had a young woman tell me that if God called her on the phone she would answer and start then getting her life in order. That attitude is careless in thinking that she could wait for a sign or a call before preparing for Christ’s return. His return could happen at any moment and hiding in the bushes like Adam in the garden who was ashamed and afraid to look God in the face is not a wise plan. Yet aren’t we all a little like that? We are waiting for a sign or something to change so we can get going in the direction God has called us to go. I know if we just finished each project before we moved on to the next we would be ready for company at all times. But the real issue is this: Am I ready for Jesus? Am I making sure I am the example I need to be for my kids and my grand kids. Am I using every opportunity God puts before me? Am I answering God’s call.? Am I prepared for what ever and whoever God puts in my life. I pray that we all do better in looking for His return and that we follow Samuel’s example and say “Yes Lord, Your servant is listening”.
